Problem downloading onto my Apple Macbook?

I recently bought an apple macbook, and am having problems downloading. I can download applications, but when i try to open them, they open in the "text edit" (whatever that is!!!) and when it opens, its all just lots of letters and crap! I dont know how to change where it downloads into, or how to open downloads, or install them and am pretty much totally confused!! Someone please help a damsel in distress! xxx Thanks in advance!

sounds like the things you're downloading aren't compatible with your version of OS - check the system requirements on the host websites before downloading.

You can find out details of your system by clicking on the apple icon in the top corner of the screen, then "about this mac". It's also useful to do the Software Update (it's free - go to System Preferences and click on the icon) as new versions of apple software become available all the time.
