What do you do when your MacBook Optical Drive won't play DVDs anymore?

I have a mid-2006 model Mac Book, the black one. It's running on the Tiger operating system with OS 10.4.11. It just started doing this recently. I put in a DVD. It makes a lot of noise, like it's trying to read the disc, then ejects it. Is there anything I can do manually to fix it? Or do I need to take it in to get it fixed by them?

If you've tried several DVDs that used to work, then I'd say it's time to replace that drive with a newer, faster one. They're very inexpensive these days, compared to the cost of repairing an existing one. Take it to the Apple Store and have them test it first to be sure it's the drive and not something else, first. Find out what it would cost to repair it from them, versus the cost of getting a new one (not that you have to get a new one from Apple; it's just for comparing prices.

You can go to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13 and you'll see you can buy a new one for $200 and install it yourself if you have the tools and know what you're doing (there is a detailed instruction guide for this), or let an Apple Authorized Service Provider do it for you.
