Apples for Photographers?

I am an avid photographer interested in a new Apple computer. I shoot raw and was wondering if it was more wise to get a MacBook Pro or a MacBook with an external Apple display. I've heard lots of things about color calibration, but I'm not sure which route to take.

It depends.

Pros usually have both a notebook and desktop computer. The notebook for location work and the desktop for everything. The large 21" to 24" screen on the desktop is very useful when making critical decisions when editing (sorting) images.

That said, if you are only planning on owning one computer, then you will want to buy a notebook with an external monitor output, so you can use it both in the office and on the road. However, as you may have surmised, notebook computers, Mac's or PC's have far less features than a full fledged desktop computer (like up to 4, quad core processors, 4GB or RAM, accelerated graphics cards with their own CPU and the ability to have 2TB or better in hard drive space.

A note on calibration.

For under $260, you can buy a monitor calibration tool. EyeOne2 and Spyder are two such tools. LCD's need to be calibrated about once a month ... CRT's, once a week.
