Why do I get the spinning ball on the screen of my MacBook whenever I engage a multimedia recording segment?

The spinning (and extraordinarily annoying) 'the computer is thinking' ball usually pops up when I try to record video in Photo Booth or iMovie. The program seems to freeze, then I force quit the application. It's a new computer. What is your advice?

boy apple really messed up with leopard, i dont use imovie but maybe its the video formats that you are using with it
