Please HELP! i don't know whats wrong with my Macbook.?

So i was on Youtube and Chantango. While i was searching for a video on Youtube my computer automatically starts thinking. at first i didn't worry because it was probably Safari just not responding, but when i tried to force quit. it wouldn't let me do that either, so i had no choice but to hold the Power button for a manual shutdown. When i started it back up. this grey screen appears with a flashing folder that has a question mark in the middle. i have no idea what this is singling, but its really scaring me and i really would like to know how to fix it. To make matters worse this isn't my Laptop.

I have the common white MacBook, the one everyone has i guess.

You don't have a virus.

Your Mac is telling you that it does not know where the startup disk is located. This can be caused by a failing hard drive or it can be a minor disk error.

If you have the original System DVD that the laptop came with you can boot from the DVD by inserting the DVD and starting the Mac up while holding down the "c" key. This tells the Mac to boot from the optical disk. Once the Mac boots from the disk you can select your language and on the very next screen a menu bar should show up at the top of the screen.

In this menu bar look for "Disk Utility" and select it.

Once Disk Utility is running you should see your hard drive on the left side of the application window, select it.

Then select "Disk First Aid" on the right side of the window.

In Disk First Aid click on the "repair disk" button. When that is done (it may take a while) click on the "repair permissions" button, this will take a while too.

When this is finished quit the "Disk Utility" program and select "Startup Disk" from the top menu.

When "Startup Disk" opens click on the icon that represents your hard drive.

Now you can reboot the Mac and it should startup normally.

If Disk Utility does not show you an icon for your hard disk than the disk is damaged beyond simple repair. You will need to schedule an appointment at your local Apple Store to see about repairs.
