Is it possible to transfer my Mac HDD among Macs and run off of it?

I currently have a MacBook Pro with a 500GB drive. Thinking of getting a Mac mini, but because I have so many modifications and files on my hard drive, I thought it would be simpler to simply put my current hard drive into the Mac mini. Is that possible? In other words; would the Mac mini have any problems running off the OS as it currently is installed in my MacBook Pro HDD?

The easiest thing to do would probably be to create a Time Machine backup of the Macbook Pro and use it with the Migration Assistant during the setup of OSX on the new Mac Mini. You'll need an external hard drive though but this is the process Apple recommends to move your old stuff to a new Mac.

The problem with putting the MBP drive in the Mini is the disassembly of the Mini is a bit of a hassle. If you don't mind doing the transplant there shouldn't be any technical reason it wouldn't work since they're both SATA drives (assuming it's a newer MBP /w Snow Leopard). I don't think you'd run into any issues because the drives are coming from different types of systems but it could happen... so the Time Machine backup would be simpler.
