Is Linux free OS?

I want to run another operating system on my macbook pro OSX side (alum) and I know nothing Lunux. I was hoping that it can Parella dual boot or bootcamp? I was told to work "differently" from (Windows) for what exactly? I had XP but corrupted so that only want to have another operating system on my mac. I do not want Windows 7, because the show is almost up, so if anyone can Lunix is free to say what I need to know proper installation?

If you know nothing about Linux, which could have been in deep water. Installing Linux is the easy part, but configuration can be complex as a command line interface is often used for configuration, especially drivers, hard drives, and extraction programs. You should learn about it before jumping in to reinstall XP or install Windows 7, depending on availability.
