Does the Mini DisplayPort on MacBooks do audio?

I want to connect my aluminum MacBook to an HDTV. I'm trying to figure out if I can use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to get video AND audio via the HDMI port on my TV. I have heard inconclusively that the Mini DisplayPort will not transfer audio, just video. Does anybody know for sure / has anyone tried this? If it won't work, what is a good setup to transfer audio and video to my TV? I'm not a huge stickler for amazing sound quality if that changes anything. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
