Why does my wireless router signal seem vary in the same location?

I have broadband via Sky and use the free wireless router they provided. I have no problem if I am very close to the router but if I am upstairs or in the garden I find that sometimes I either cant get a connection or if I do I lose it after a while. Is this because the router is faulty / poor quality or could it be my laptop (Macbook). Sometimes it feels like I am losing signal because of interference from a neighbours router signal but am not sure this is always the problem. I am often having to reinput the password to try to get the connection restored which can be frustrating.

The distance is not far perhaps 4-5 metres.

Your signal varies due to the room. If there are large objects in the room, the signal will bounce of them. It's no different than a radio signal. Your walls also pay a big part, if they are very dense they will obstruct the signal as well. If you are having issues, check your router to see if it has a signal booster setting or you'll likely need to purchase one (or build).
