Mac mini/macbook pro audio?

Anyone have a Mac and using the optical audio output?
Do I go the route of using the optical audio with a receiver or get a Firewave attachment to split the signal into 5.1 for my different Mac's??
I will use it for regular use not recording.

I use digital optical output to connect m new Mac Mini to Onkyo receiver - it works great! I also use USB to connect to external DAC for music.
You can try optical connection first - optical able can be purchased for $5 - www.monoprice.com for example. Make she use get MINI OPTICAL on one end (to connect to your Mac), and regilar conneciton on the other end - to your receiver.
If it doe snot work for some reason - you can get the firewire option.
