why did my macbook run a apple hardware test ?

hey guys just wondering why my apple macbook decided to run a hardware test when i turned it on this morning ? im new-ish to mac and theres barely anything on it and ive rarely installed things on to it from the internet however i left it on last night from half 2 till 4 am because i was told apple automatically set macs to erm repair disk permissions maybe at 3 aam because apparently this makes your mac faster concerned as to why it asked me to do a test on it this morning what does this mean? have i done something to my mac ?

That seems to be the norm lately on newish machines -They check the drivers etc and do the upgrades...This happens on my new HP as well.
