can't uninstall symantec from my mac.?

hi! i have a macbook with OS X, and i can't remove symantec from my system. i tried downloading the uninstaller thing that norton has on it's website, but when i clicked it, the text editor popped up and it was just gobbeldy guk. so i dragged the symantec folder to the trash basket, but i think it's still running because when i restarted, a message popped up saying symantec had been turned off, and did i want to turn it back on. how can i get rid of it?
