Laptop for art school student?

I'm going to art school (for college) this upcoming fall, and I will be buying a laptop for it. I will be using it for school work and digital painting with a Wacom tablet.

What's the best brand + model I should look into? My budget is under $1000, so no MacBooks. (And I want it new, not used.)
